While my mom was on rounds, I learned to read in the OR gallery, I played in the morgue, I colored with crayons on old ER charts. Hospital was my church, my school, my home; hospital was my safe place, my sanctuary. I love it here. Correction: loved it here.”

“Well, Meredith is anything but cold. She smiles… not that often, but when she does, you know because she’s really going through a lot, but it’s… you just feel warm. She’s kind. I mean, she can be a little selfish at times, and she’s flawed. But she’s kind. She cares about people and, um… she cares about her patients. She’s going to be a brilliant surgeon. You know, around here, she’s known as the one to beat.”

We had a shooting at this hospital a few months ago and it was… All I know is I appreciate my life, and the lives we saved here even more. I know it made us better doctors, better people because of it. You know, I don’t kid myself: the fear, the second guessing, the self doubt…it’s gonna be there for a while. I can’t outrun it, but I can push through it. Being a doctor gives me a sense of purpose, I know I survived for a reason. I think you can either sit and dwell in darkness or you can try and shine a light. We choose light.
